The image is inspired by the song Made to Parade and references lyrics and themes of the song regarding the way in which the modern world we parade our lives on social media and get hung up on the rat race of trying to climb the ladder of success, and how we ride in on our "high horses" of wealth and perceived fame and success and "look down on the peasantry"... perpetually chasing fortune and fame and broadcasting our lives all over social media, desperately looking for approval and likes and followers: "Well you're made to parade with the mess you made". There's also a reference to the lyric "technolo-jesus" from the song Straight Jacket Fitting, alluding to how we are so proudly patting ourselves on the back for our brilliant technology as we parade ourselves off a cliff, oblivious to how our blind devotion to our hubris for our technological advancements will be our undoing.
This QOTSA tour is titled "The End is Nero", so if Nero played a fiddle while Rome burned, modern humans we would film and livestream our own demise as we parade off a cliff, watching our selves on our phones as we plummet to our end.
There's also a reference to the famous Salvador Dali painting "The Temptation of Saint Anthony". In that painting Saint Anthony is trying to fend off the temptations of vice, of money and lust and greed, all being presented to him on the backs of Dali's famous long legged animals...in our world, we do not try and fend off the temptations of vice, as Saint Anthony did in the painting, quite the opposite, we welcome and champion all the vices, we promote and celebrate fame, greed, lust, vice....and hence why with all our hubris and self praise and admiration, we are made to parade right off a cliff as our empire crumbles under the weight of our own arrogance and pride.
